For the first time in FIBA history, there will be 32 teams competing for the 2023 World Cup. The event will be held in Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines from 25 August to 10 September 2023.
The first qualifiers for the 2023 World Cup will be played from November 2021 to February 2023, with 80 national teams in action over six qualifying windows in Asia/Oceania, Africa, Americas and Europe. The top three teams in each group plus the best fourth team will advance to the main draw.
There are some standouts to watch, with the United States and Germany among them. The former has a talented young core that should help them get back on track following an 18th-place finish at the last World Cup. The Germans have a strong nucleus of players, including NBA stars Dennis Schroder and Franz Wagner, who could be instrumental in getting back on the right track.
Meanwhile, the defending champions, Spain, are looking to make a return trip for the first time since winning the championship in China in 2019. The Spanish national team is one of the top teams in the continent and should have no trouble advancing after a 9-3 record in the Americas qualifiers.
The defending world champions will be joined by Australia, ranked third in the fiba world cup 2023 betting odds World Rankings and looking to return to the world meet after finishing fourth at the last tournament. The Australian Boomers have lost four of their six games in the qualification phase, but are still in good shape to challenge for a spot at the top.
Defending Asian champions Philippines are also looking to improve their record in the qualification round after going 4-3. The hosts have been able to score plenty of points and hold opponents to less than their average in the first half.
Other qualifiers in the Asia region include China, which is looking to improve on a 2-4 record in the Asian qualifying stages after falling at the hands of Egypt and Tunisia in their first two matches. Iran, ranked 24th in the FIBA world rankings, has been consistently competitive in this competition as well, and should be a force to be reckoned with in the Asian qualifiers.
Jordan, ranked 31st in the FIBA world rankings, has also been a standout team in this competition. The team is in a good place to get its World Cup ticket after beating Panama, 106-50 on Monday.
Another qualifier with a solid chance of getting to the world meet is Puerto Rico, which has been on fire since losing in the opening game of the qualifying round. The Puerto Ricans are 8-0 and locked in the top position of their group in the FIBA Americas zone.
The Dominican Republic, a co-host country for the 2023 World Cup and ranked 25th in the world, is also in fine shape as it went 9-3 in the Americas qualifiers. The Dominican Republic will also be making a return to the world meet for the first time since it finished runner-up in 2014.
